Payers ranked by 2024 profits

The nation's largest payers have filed their fourth-quarter earnings reports, revealing which recorded the largest profits in 2024.


1. UnitedHealth Group: $14.4 billionTotal net earnings in 2024 were $14.4 billion, down 35.6% year over year. UnitedHealthcare's total earnings from operations in 2024 were $15.6 billion, down 4.9% year over year.


2. Elevance Health: $6 billionTotal net income in 2024 was nearly $6 billion, almost unchanged from the year prior. The insurance division reported a total operating gain of $6.2 billion in 2024.


3. CVS Health: $4.6 billionTotal net income in 2024 was $$4.6 billion, down 45% year over year. Aetna reported a $984 million operating loss in 2024.


4. Cigna Group: $3.4 billionTotal net income in 2024 was $3.4 billion, down 34% year over year. The insurance side of the business, Cigna Healthcare, reported an operating income of $4.4 billion in 2024.


5. Centene: $3.3 billionTotal net income in 2024 was $3.3 billion, up 22.3% year over year.


6. Humana: $1.2 billionTotal net income totaled $1.2 billion, down 52%. The company's insurance segment reported an operating income of $1.3 billion in 2024.


7. Molina Healthcare: 1.2 billionTotal net income totaled nearly $1.2 billion, up 8%.
